The Credit Union Development Educators (DEs) in North Carolina and South Carolina are pleased to announce that scholarships to attend CUDE are now available to staff at credit unions in the Carolinas! Working in partnership with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and the Carolinas Credit Union League, one scholarship will be awarded each year.
What is CUDE?
A program of the National Credit Union Foundation, the DE program brings renewed relevance to the philosophy of "People Helping People." This unique and transformative training provides critical lessons in cooperative principles, credit union philosophy and international development issues while incorporating challenges credit unions face today.
During the National Credit Union Foundation’s week-long DE Training, participants are involved in group exercises, field trips, encouraged to ask questions of visiting speakers, and are required to complete team projects proposing solutions for credit unions to help alleviate or eliminate challenging situations in any given area.
Since 1982, more than 1,700 credit union advocates from over 35 countries have graduated from DE Training to become Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs). Included among these are more than 90 DEs from North Carolina and South Carolina who are passionate about credit unions and the social responsibility impact they can have individually and collectively.
How are scholarships funded?
The Carolinas CUDEs created the Principles & Philosophy Conference in 2010 in order to provide credit union staff with an in-depth look at the credit union business model, the Seven Cooperative Principles and the role of credit unions in the financial system. Presented in partnership with the Carolinas Credit Union League each year, the conference has grown into a vital educational event for the benefit of credit union staff and volunteers.
Earnings from the conference each year sweep into a DE Scholarship Fund at the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. This fund has provided scholarship opportunities for the Principles & Philosophy Conference for the past three years. With the growth of the fund in the years since, Carolinas CUDEs voted to add DE Scholarships to the mix in 2017.
Who is eligible?
DE is a week-long certification program and is ideal for credit union staff who have demonstrated through their actions their passion and commitment to credit unions. As such, the application criteria is as follows:
