2018 Carolinas Cup raises $66,000, marks record-breaking success
Thursday, November 15, 2018
On October 14-16, 2018, North and South Carolina credit unions and business partners came together for a good cause and friendly competition at the 14th Annual Carolinas Cup golf tournament at the Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte, NC. Hosted by CUNA Mutual Group, the two-day competition raises money for the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation’s partnership with Victory Junction to exclusively sponsor its Reach Program. Provided at every Ronald McDonald House and nearly every children’s hospital in the Carolinas, the Reach Program brings entertaining and more importantly, distracting, activities to families and patients.
“The Carolinas Cup is a tradition fourteen years strong and our 2018 tournament broke the record,” noted Tom Heyden of CUNA Mutual Group. “We raised a little more than $66,000 for kids in the Carolinas and we can all be proud of that success.”
South Carolina Captain Scott Weaver of Carolina Foothills FCU and North Carolina Captain Todd Kenthack of Fort Bragg FCU were responsible for the pairings at each day’s round. The first round ended with South Carolina up 9-5. Ultimately, the South Carolina team handily took the Carolinas Cup trophy back from North Carolina.
In addition to the time on the course, participants bid on silent and live auction items, including vacation prizes. Nearly $27,000 was raised from the auctions alone thanks to the generosity of the attendees and those who donated.
Also in attendance were Victory Junction Founder Kyle Petty and a family who experienced the magic of Victory Junction at camp and in the hospital through the Reach Program. Ten-year-old AJ spoke to the audience about his uplifting experience with the Reach staff while he undergoes treatment at the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic in Charlotte. AJ was only two years old when he was diagnosed with a medical condition that requires him to receive treatment every 10 days. He has spent the last eight years undergoing treatments and the Reach Program provides fun activities to keep him engaged and inspired! AJ was joined by his parents Jodi and Randy, and little sister Madison.
“We had no idea AJ was such a huge baseball fan until he arrived at the auction and saw one of the hallmark items for the evening – a weekend in New York and tickets to a Yankees game,” remarked Lauren Whaley, president of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. “AJ was beaming as he kicked off the auction, but wasn’t allowed by his parents to bid again. After seeing his love of baseball and knowing his birthday was only days away, CUNA Mutual Group quickly rallied and offered to get the family four tickets to a Yankees Game and provide accommodations. It was such an awesome moment and after the mom, Jodi, dried her eyes, lots of hugs were offered to the CUNA Mutual Group team.”
The Carolinas Foundation would like to express its upmost gratitude to CUNA Mutual Group for hosting such a great event and to this year’s sponsors, players, and auction donors. The Carolinas Cup has raised money for Victory Junction since it started in 2004 and over the last four years, more than $185,000 has been raised for its outreach program, Reach.
