Piedmont Chapter partners with the Carolinas Foundation for a CU Give Back Day
Thursday, August 30, 2018
The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and the Piedmont Chapter of Credit Unions, with support from nearly 30 credit union volunteers, hosted a successful CU Give Back Day on August 16, 2018 that spanned across two locations in Charlotte, NC: Levine Children’s Hospital and the Charlotte Ronald McDonald House. The day’s events were organized as part of Victory Junction’s Reach Program, which delivers camp magic to children and their families in pediatric hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses.
Victory Junction held its Reach Carnival in the main lobby of Levine Children’s Hospital, where credit union volunteers helped run carnival-style games and craft activities with ticket redemption for prizes. More than 135 participants including patients, siblings, caregivers and families joined in the fun. This was the fourth credit union volunteer-led Reach Carnival and the largest attendance on record.
Another volunteer activity took place at the Ronald McDonald House, where credit union volunteers spent nearly two hours cleaning the facility to help the house stay safe, organized and germ-free for the guest families. Other volunteers planned, bought and prepared free baked treats for guests to enjoy—the aroma, filling the halls and making the house feel like home.

“All of the volunteers came away with stronger hearts after their experience—what a rewarding day!” remarked Lauren Whaley, Carolinas Credit Union Foundation president. “We owe a great deal of thanks to our Charlotte-area credit unions for making this day special for so many kids and families. Volunteers and Victory Junction’s Reach staff were given a “standing round of applause” from Levine in an email of thanks following the event.”
“At Levine, we saw one family who hadn’t been out of their room all week, another who hadn’t done anything as a family in months, and nurses even told us kids were asking for treatments to be moved so they could go back to the Carnival,” Whaley continued. “The success stories are endless. The comforting distracting Victory Junction’s Reach program provides is a testament to the Foundation’s mission of enriching the lives of children.”
Special thanks to all of the credit union volunteers from First Legacy Community Credit Union, Carolina Federal Credit Union, Truliant Federal Credit Union, Nova Credit Union, Carolinas Telco Federal Credit Union, Sharonview Federal Credit Union, Local Government Federal Credit Union, Charlotte Metro Credit Union, and the Carolinas Credit Union League. Together, you made the day so magical for patients and families.
