COLUMBIA, SC – Carolinas Credit Union League (CCUL) and nearly forty volunteers from credit unions from across the state teamed up to bring Financial Literacy Day to the South Carolina State House Tuesday, April 17. In its fourth year, the event highlights the importance of financial education and credit unions' commitment to it.
Credit unions and the League greeted nearly fifty River Bluff High School students for a "Reality of Money" life simulation. Each student is assigned a unique lifestyle in which they have to budget and navigate through situations such as housing, groceries, transportation, credit cards, and entertainment. When they successfully completed a first round, exercise leader Lisa Vandys of Carolina Foothills FCU issued new profiles with greater challenges including low income, lack of secondary education, or single-parenting.
"Our students find it so impactful to understand the workings of their budgets on different incomes and the importance of education on earning good wages," said River Bluff High School teacher Keith Brayman.
The students weren't the only ones who came to realizations during the simulation. South Carolina State Credit Union employee Tal Lackey was impressed by the students' willingness to get second jobs and do what was necessary to make ends meet. Lackey said, "They were worried about the bottom-line and I think it was really eye opening for them."
Financial Literacy Day culminated in public remarks by League President and CEO John Radebaugh, Senator Ronnie Cromer (District 18), and SC Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman. Cromer also presented the League with an official proclamation from Governor Henry McMaster designating April 2018 as Financial Literacy Month.
"This is a wonderful, wonderful partnership between education, credit unions, and our students and educators from across the state," said Spearman.
The League thanks the many credit unions who organized and participated in Financial Literacy Day including Caro FCU, Carolina Foothills FCU, Heritage Trust FCU, MTC FCU, Palmetto Citizens FCU, SAFE FCU, SC Federal CU, SC State CU, SC Telco FCU, SPC CU, and Upstate FCU.
