"Yesterday was a humbling day," said Stephanie Watson, CUaware Lowcountry CU Chapter president and MIS manager for SC Federal CU, in a Facebook post last year. "I met some of the bravest and strongest parents. What they are facing is unimaginable, but somehow these families persevere. Today my problems are lighter and my will is stronger. Huge thank you to the Reach Program for allowing me to volunteer and to the Ronald McDonald House for the peace of mind you provide these families."

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation is excited to invite credit union volunteers to participate in the Reach Program being offered at all of the Ronald McDonald Houses in the Carolinas. In partnership with Victory Junction, the Carolinas Foundation is the exclusive sponsor of the Reach Program which brings the magic of camp to local hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) in every corner of the Carolinas. The goal of each visit by specially trained Reach staff and credit union volunteers is to brighten a family’s day and bring a special smile to their faces – Victory Junction style.

At RMH, volunteers are able to assist Reach staff in hosting family nights which provide a comforting distraction to parents, siblings, and on occasion the kids being treated.

On her experience as a volunteer, Sharonview FCU’s Donna Sullivan recalled the magical moments with families during an arts & crafts night. “It was amazing! One of the girls we had the pleasure of meeting had just experienced the Reach program at the hospital through Victory Junction so it was awesome to hear about her day and some of her favorite things that she got to do at “camp.” Her mom was so appreciative of the Ronald McDonald House because it made traveling a little easier when having to come to Charlotte for treatments and doctor appointments. [I] had a great time and look forward to volunteering again this year!”

Reach volunteer shifts (6-8 p.m.) for March at RMH include:

  • March 1 – Columbia, SC – 2 Volunteers Needed
  • March 8 – Charlotte, NC (5 Volunteers) and Greenville, SC (3 Volunteers)

More Ways to Support Reach:

In 2015, the Foundation pledged $800,000 to fund this program for four years. Now in 2018, the Foundation needs to raise approximately $200,000 to fulfill this pledge. Already, the success of the Reach program is visible in the number of locations where the program is offered. Victory Junction’s Reach Program went from serving less than 1,500 children and families annually to now serving more than 7,000 thanks in large part to the support of credit unions in the Carolinas.

Help us meet our pledge by 2019 by making a tax-deductible donation online here. Your credit union or Chapter can also host fundraisers, participate in payroll deduction or help with assembling Reach supplies for the “campers”.
