Tommy Lentz named 2018 CUaware Protégé; Mike Ramos and Sara Portis runners-up

COLUMBIA, S.C. and RALEIGH, NC—Tommy Lentz of Greenville, SC was named “CUaware Protégé” on Friday, February 2 during the 2018 Carolinas Credit Union Connect in Charlotte, NC. He will serve for one year as dual-state spokesperson for rising professionals and the opportunities credit unions provide them.

Lentz, who works as a contact center manager at Greenville Federal Credit Union, achieved the honor by a combination of scores on a standardized exam and on his presentation during the finals competition at Carolinas CU Connect. All six finalists’ presentations were judged by a panel that included HealthShare Credit Union CEO Genice DeCorte, Cooperative Credit Union Association VP of Professional Development Bill Nagle, and Carolinas Credit Union Foundation President Lauren Whaley.

“The CUaware Protégé Competition was a great experience and personal achievement I will always remember," said Lentz. "It's an honor to represent the Upstate Chapter and Greenville Federal Credit Union. I am thankful for the senior management team at Greenville Federal Credit Union for the time and resources they spend to develop their employees. I encourage all young professionals to participate in this competition; I am confident they will learn more about the credit union movement and themselves in the process.”

Lentz, along with first runner-up Mike Ramos (Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union) and second runner-up Sara Portis (Coastal Credit Union) will choose from these developmental scholarships provided by the League:

  • Southeast CUNA Management School – One – year registration, valued at more than $1,600 (requires commitment to three-year program)
  • CCUL Hike the Hill (Washington, DC) – Full participation including airfare and lodging, valued at $1,100
  • Financial Counseling Certification + Webinar Voucher – Includes program tuition and a $600 webinar voucher (total value around $1,500).
  • Principles & Philosophy Conference + Webinar Voucher – Includes conference tuition, two nights lodging, meals, and a $600 webinar voucher (total value around $1,300).

An added benefit offered to all the chapter finalists is the opportunity to participate in the CUaware Protégé Mentor program. This year-long mentorship program for credit union professionals in the Carolinas partners mentees with established credit union leaders for cross-cultural impact and creates an atmosphere for new perspectives, personal growth, and development opportunities.
