Update 1/22/17 6:20 p.m.: Hours after the Senate passed a stopgap bill to end the government shutdown, the House passed the same bill which will keep federal government operations going through Feb. 8.

NC Senator Richard Burr (R) debating the continuing resolution to end the government shutdown.

With the pledge from Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to Sen. Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to allow debate on controversial issues, such as the DREAM Act, the government shutdown is poised to end today, pending a House vote. The Senate had sufficient votes on an agreement to continue to fund government operations through Feb. 8, by which time a new budget measure should be approved.

In the meantime, issues like regulatory relief for credit unions have been placed on the back burner in the Senate. It’s up to credit union supporters to make sure that this important bill, S 2155 - Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act, does not get lost in the shuffle. Use the Grassroots Action page to urge North and South Carolina senators to lobby leadership for a floor vote.

This regulatory relief bill supports Main Street, credit unions, small banks, and the consumers and small businesses that they serve. It provides protections against elder abuse and ensures credit union loans are treated the same as their bank counterparts.
