LGFCU donates $100K and Carolina credit unions surpass a half million in disaster aid

As wildfires remain a threat in California and those who suffered as a result of this year’s hurricanes push towards recovery, credit unions in the Carolinas continue to pledge their support for disaster relief aid.
Just last week, Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) announced its donation of $100,000, with $85,000 going to the National Credit Union Foundation’s (the Foundation) General CUaid Fund, and $15,000 towards the World Council of Credit Union’s (WOCCU) Caribbean Relief Fund. LGFCU’s support marks more than $558,000 donated by the credit union industry in the Carolinas.
Total contributions by Carolina credit unions—tracked by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation—were made through its own Disaster Relief Fund and sent on (dollar-for-dollar) to the Foundation and WOCCU, per the request of the donor. A factor that enhanced local contributions was the Carolinas Foundation’s decision to implement a grant-matching campaign following each call for aid.
In total, the Carolinas Foundation provided $15,000 in support with its matched grant initiatives for credit unions impacted by hurricanes and wildfires in 2017. $537,300 came from credit unions directly and close to $6,000 was provided by credit union members and employees.

In the two months since the hurricanes struck the Caribbean and USA, WOCCU has raised over $100,000 through the Caribbean Disaster Relief Fund. The money will be used for reconstruction and repair to support the Dominica credit unions and their 75,000 plus members who have been affected by Hurricane Maria. The National Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million and donations will be used for any credit union employees and volunteers affected by wildfires in addition to Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Irma and Tropical Storm Harvey.
About the Disaster Relief Fund
The Disaster Relief Fund is a resource for credit unions and communities that are in need of assistance because of a disastrous event. To date, the fund has provided more than $1.5 million in grants since it was established. Most notably in 2016, following the damage of Hurricane Matthew in the Carolinas, the Carolinas Foundation awarded nearly $50,000 in quick impact grants to hundreds of credit union members and employees. Then in early 2017, $40,000 in community foundation grants were awarded for continued Matthew relief efforts in each state.
