Across Forsyth and Burke counties in North Carolina, Members Credit Union (MCU) staff came together to bring holiday cheer to those in need around the community, especially the homeless and families facing financial strain.

Thanks to fundraising efforts like Jean Days and selling MCU shirts to members, 30 bicycles (valued at $1,600) were purchased for the Christmas Cheer charity.

Earlier in the month, MCU collected 30 new bicycles for donation to Christmas Cheer, the oldest charity organization in Morganton, NC. The mission of the charity is to assist families facing financial difficulty in Burke County during the holidays. The bikes in addition to other toys donated by people in the community were gifted to children and families in need December 12-14 at the Burke County Fairgrounds.

The employees of MCU’s Morganton and Valdese locations began talking about supporting Christmas Cheer after hearing about the charity on a local radio station last year. But it wasn’t until the unexpected passing of MCU employee Roslyn Phipps, a strong supporter of Christmas Cheer, that staff members at both branches decided to dedicate their Christmas charity projects to this cause that she was passionate about.

“This was just one way we could honor the memory of our co-worker and friend and keep her giving spirit alive,” explained Vickie Ray, MCU’s Valdese and Morganton branch manager.

Assisting the homeless in the Winston-Salem, NC area, MCU staff donated 15 pairs of new tennis shoes along with 15 gift bags filled with hygiene items, flashlights, and batteries.

Then on December 16, MCU donated 15 pairs of new tennis shoes, along with 15 gift bags filled with hygiene items, flashlights, and batteries to homeless men and women throughout Winston-Salem, NC. Socks were also included in the kits thanks to a donation from Harriss and Covington Hosiery Mills, Inc.

The credit union decided on this fundraiser after MCU Member Relations Coordinator Jon Hamby met with Charles Hahn, an advocate for Winston-Salem Homeless, and learned more about Winston-Salem’s community of homeless people also known as “campers.” The meeting included visiting various homeless camps within the city and learning about their most significant needs--one of those being reliable footwear.

“I am grateful to MCU for having such caring employees who go the extra mile for their members and their communities,” exclaimed Hahn.
