Chapel Hill, NC – Eighteen credit union professionals graduated from the 2017 Leadership Development Institute (LDI) on Thursday, December 7, 2017.

The graduates completed the one-year program designed to empower current and rising credit union leaders with modern strategies for developing leadership skills and critical thinking. Meeting each quarter for two-day workshops at UNC-Chapel Hill Friday Center, the curriculum exposed students to leadership and management concepts that include situational leadership, emotional intelligence, strategic leadership, talent management, coaching to build capacity, and more.

Between quarterly sessions, students completed at-home assignments and readings, along with journaling their experience and/or participating in the one-on-one executive coaching offered through the program.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Marriott Courtyard Chapel Hill, welcomed invited guests, LDI instructors and coaches, and league staff to attend. During his remarks, Master Trainer and Senior Consultant for Center of Leadership Studies JD McPherson left students with an encouraging word and challenge.

“As you go out, you're not going  to be able to take action on all you've learned [here] at once,” McPherson shared. “Be willing to do them poorly at the beginning until you develop efficacy, skill and excellence in them.”

Piedmont Advantage CU VP of Lending Tim Mullen

Nominated to speak on behalf of his fellow classmates, Piedmont Advantage Credit Union VP of Lending Tim Mullen also shared his insight on the LDI experience, where they go from here, and the importance of leading with passion.

“This class provided all of us with the ability to know ourselves,” Mullen said. “But still...you can be the best leader--following all these outlines and guides--but if you don't have passion for what you're doing, what are you doing it for? You've got to be passionate in your leadership and believe in what's happening--persevere--because you'll be challenged along the way.”
