Last week, twenty-two Carolinas credit union professionals gathered again at the Friday Center at UNC-Chapel Hill for the second quarter of the Carolinas Credit Union League’s Leadership Development Institute (LDI). The annual program provides current and rising credit union leaders with the critical thinking skills and leadership strategies essential to growth and success.

Over the course of the two-day session, students participated in a number of exercises to teach them how to apply the lessons in real life.

Presented in partnership with the Center for Leadership Studies (CLS), LDI features a custom curriculum delivered by top instructors. CLS Master Trainer and Senior Consultant JD McPherson and Forge Leadership Founder Dr. Dale Gauthreaux facilitated the second quarter session.

On Thursday, June 1, students began reviewing the results of their DiSC® assessment, taken prior to the start of the program. McPherson then led the class in a general overview of DiSC® and how to integrate the DiSC® Behavioral Model with the Situational Leadership® approach. During the session, students commented on how “spot on” their DiSC® assessment was when it came to defining their management style and personality.

"I've taken DiSC before but this [class] got into more depth for how the styles can interact effectively which will be important for leaders,” commented one student on the event survey.

Gauthreaux led classwork on Friday, helping participants gain a stronger understanding of change in organizations. They reviewed the psychological effects of change, why people resist change, and how their credit union can develop a culture that promotes and embraces change.

Students found it very effective on both days to work through role playing exercises that connected the lessons to real-life issues within their respective credit unions.

LDI students will meet next on September 7-8 for the third quarter session. Meanwhile, the League is accepting applications through December 29, 2017 for the 2018 Leadership Development Institute, with curricula and instructor details to be provided at a later date.
