CUNA announces eligible award submissions include credit union projects and efforts up until July 31, 2020—the new entry deadline

The state-level 2020 CUNA Awards submission deadline has been extended to July 31, 2020, encouraging entries to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation that recognize the incredible projects and efforts credit unions are doing to support their members, especially, during these unprecedented times.

“While I know that it’s been a hectic spring for many of us, we hope that encouraging credit unions to share their work as they settle into a summer rhythm will create a 2020 Awards class that truly showcases the credit union difference,” noted Mike Hughes with CUNA in the announcement to state leagues and foundations.

Credit unions can participate by submitting their state-level entries by July 31, 2020 through the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation via the CUNA Awards online portal. Winners of the state-level competition are recognized at the Foundation’s Awards Gala held at the beginning of each year in collaboration with the Carolinas Credit Union League. All first place winners at the state-level go on to compete in CUNA’s national awards program, where winners are recognized at the Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).

“We had such an inspiring celebration last year and honored many credit unions, CU heroes and influencers for their incredible work,” Carolinas Foundation President Lauren Whaley said. “This year, there is even more opportunity to recognize Carolinas' credit unions for their dedication to members and local communities, and affirm the resiliency of our shared philosophy.”

About the CUNA Awards

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award is given to a credit union or chapter/multiple credit union group for its social responsibility projects within the community. The award is given for external activities that help other people or strengthen the structure of a community. Examples include raising funds for charity, educational activities, or community involvement projects, such as a volunteer fair, building low-income housing, or loaning employees a few hours a week to work in hospitals, retirement homes, schools, and the like.

The Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award is given to a credit union for practical application of credit union philosophy within the actual operation of the credit union. It is awarded for internal programs and services that benefit membership, including programs or policies that demonstrate their commitment to the practical application of the "People-Helping-People" philosophy. Practical examples include: provisions for the small saver or borrower; member programs for groups that are often economically challenged; internal programs or services that help to differentiate the credit union from other financial services' providers; programs that do an extraordinary job of encouraging thrift and provide a source of unbiased money management and consumer information, especially if difficult or impossible to obtain elsewhere; and evidence of an exceptional degree of service to members.

The Desjardins Financial Education Awards recognize leadership within credit unions on behalf of financial literacy for all ages. The awards consider all activities supporting personal finance education of members and non-members, including face-to-face teaching using proprietary materials and curricula, such as the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program® (HSFPP), and financial literacy leadership.
