Summit Credit Union in partnership with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation recently awarded $18,750 in grants to 15 small credit unions in the Carolinas. Courtesy of the James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation, a legacy of Sis and Jim Hamilton, the grants fund professional development opportunities for employees from small credit unions with $50 million or less in assets. In total, the James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation contributed $100,000 in 2019 to be reserved for this Professional Development Grant Program with up to $20,000 to be disbursed annually through 2024. The Carolinas Foundation opened this year’s application process in October 2019 and received 15 grant applicants, all of whom were awarded $1,250, the max for each small credit union.

After learning his credit union was selected to receive a grant, Pickens FCU President/CEO Clayton Kerr expressed how invaluable this grant will be for his employees.

“This is great news,” exclaimed Kerr. “We truly appreciate this selection and we are honored to receive the 2020 grant. This will allow us to purchase some excellent training materials for our staff. Sometimes, professional development can take a back seat to other needs in a small credit union. Because of the generosity of Elizabeth N. and James V. Hamilton, credit unions are able to provide this education. PFCU is proud to be a part of continuing Sis’s legacy. We are extremely thankful for this blessing.”

This year’s grant recipients include:

  • 1st Cooperative FCU
  • Abbeville Community FCU
  • Acclaim FCU
  • Berkeley Community FCU
  • Blue Flame CU
  • Brookland FCU
  • Edisto FCU

  • HealthShare CU
  • Pickens FCU
  • S.C.H.D District #7 FCU

“Sis Hamilton was an innovator in supporting the unique legacy found in small credit unions,” said Summit CU President/CEO Sam Whitehurst. “Sis and Jim wanted to help meet the educational and training needs of the staff and volunteers of small credit unions as part of their legacy. Summit Credit Union is proud to support this effort in their memory.”
