83 participants listen in to CCUL's first quarterly Fraud Chat
Thursday, March 21, 2019
The Carolinas Credit Union League Risk Management Resources Department (RMRD) hosted its first Fraud Chat March 14, focusing on cyber/wire fraud prevention. Turnout for the first call was a success with 83 individuals from 47 credit unions participating. These quarterly calls address the ongoing threat of fraud and help mitigate the potentially devastating effects it can have on credit unions.
The first call featured Investigator Doug Miller with the NC State Bar. Miller spoke on business email compromise (BEC) and email account compromise (EAC), which are among the growing trend of cyber-enabled crime adversely affecting financial institutions. He shared red flags to help credit unions identify and catch fraudsters faster, and a BEC checklist that includes immediate actions and prevention and recognition.
“The level of expertise, quality of speakers, and information provided is a testament to our department’s hard work over the years to build a strong network,” Risk Management Manager/Associate Counsel Trichina Pierce said. “The Fraud Chats are just one way to allow our credit unions to stay on top of very complex and costly fraud schemes such as BEC and EAC. I’m excited to see the growth of this series and I recommend every department manager be on the calls.”
Miller also addressed questions submitted by participants prior to the call.
The next Fraud Chat is June 13, hosted by Robert McKone, security and risk manager at Marine Federal Credit Union. McKone has seven years of fraud experience and 13 years of law enforcement experience. He is a certified gang specialist through the NC Gang Investigator's Association and will speak on topics related to gangs and financial crimes. RSVP and call-in information will be shared for this event when available.
