Upstate area credit unions raise $150,000 to support local children’s cancer center

A collaboration of hard work by Upstate area credit unions was recognized by the Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital at a naming ceremony on February 12, 2019 in Greenville, SC. The Upstate South Carolina Credit Unions Annual Giving Campaign (Annual Giving Campaign) was honored for its $150,000 financial commitment to improve the well-being of patients and families at GHS Children’s Hospital’s Bi-Lo Charities Children's Cancer Center. Funds raised by the group over the last three years supported the renovation of the cancer center’s oncology and hematology waiting room. Now called the Carolinas Credit Unions Waiting Area, the renovated waiting room is filled with toys and games, comfortable furniture, and a kitchenette for families and patients who spend many long hours at the center.

The honorary Annual Giving Campaign committee members recognized for their efforts include Carolina Foothills Federal Credit Union, Greenville Federal Credit Union, Greenville Health System Federal Credit Union, Greenville Heritage Federal Credit Union, MTC Federal Credit Union, and Self-Help Federal Credit Union.

This group of credit unions has deep roots when it comes to living out the sixth cooperative principle: Cooperation Among Cooperatives. Over the last 10 years, they have worked together to raise more than $400,000 for various causes. In early 2015, the group agreed to formalize their collaborative fundraising cause as the Upstate South Carolina Credit Unions Charitable Giving Campaign. In that same year, the group announced its $150,000 three-year pledge to the GHS Children’s Hospital.

It was this cooperative, philanthropic effort that earned the group the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation’s 2018 Partner in Philanthropy Award.

Currently, the Annual Giving Campaign is looking to select its next fundraising initiative and wants to spark the interest of other local credit unions to join in their community focused projects. The Annual Giving Campaign has worked collaboratively with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation since its formalization in 2015.
