The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has announced a final cycle of Disaster Relief Fund grants for victims of the 2018 hurricanes. Called Phase III Grants, this level of financial assistance is intended to help credit union employees and volunteers who suffered catastrophic loss and are still in need of assistance beyond the Phase I and Phase II grants.
The Phase III grant cycle, which is activated 150 days following a disaster and awarded based on individual need and total funds available, is running from February 13 through March 8, 2019. During that time, credit union employees still impacted by last year’s hurricanes may apply for aid.

Once all Phase III applications are received by March 8, the Foundation will make a determination on each grant and notify each applicant of the status.
Phase I Grants (up to $500 and issued within 30 days following a disaster) and Phase II Grants (up to $1,500 and issued 60 to 90 days after a disaster) have already been distributed. To date, 258 grants have been processed for a total of $180,418.43 in aid awarded to employees, helping them get back on their feet and ready to serve the needs of credit union members. This includes employees from First Carolina People’s CU, Fort Bragg FCU, Marine FCU, Self-Help CU, Sharonview FCU, and State Employees’ CU.
“The credit union mantra of “people helping people” is never more apparent than when a disaster strikes,” noted Lauren Whaley, Foundation president. “We are very appreciative of all donors in the Carolinas and across the country who have made these grants possible, and of the time and energy of part-time Foundation staff and the accounting staff at the League to ensure Phase I and Phase II grants were delivered quickly to those in need. The support shown by credit unions is a powerful testament to our industry’s core values.”
|Contributions to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund are welcomed and appreciated by those affected by disaster. Since its establishment, the Carolinas Foundation has provided more than $2 million in aid to the local, national and international credit union communities. Any donation collected is disbursed dollar-for-dollar to aid in current or future disaster recovery.
