Columbia, SC and Raleigh, NC--Carolinas credit unions are working hard to access and reopen facilities especially in eastern North Carolina, where Hurricane Florence brought flooding that restricted access and left much of the area without power.

The League continues to monitor media and check with credit unions on operational status, inviting reports to commpr@carolinasleague.org. The majority have returned to normal operations. Some still have branches offline or reopened for limited--but valuable--access.

Meanwhile, the League also has received offers of various support for affected credit unions and staff, including emergency repair and temporary facilities from a construction company and gift cards from Amoco Federal Credit Union in Texas, which had received support for its own recovery from Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The League and the Carolinas Foundation continue to work together on where help is needed and how best to direct resources.

"When we get more information, I think we'll have a better sense of how we can help credit unions in the coming days and weeks," said League President and CEO Dan Schline on Monday as he continued to receive reports from credit union CEOs. "We expect to hear more as they are able to get to their credit unions, assess damage, and take inventory."

The Carolinas Foundation is prepared to disburse aid to disaster-stricken credit union employees and volunteers through its disaster relief grant application process. Applications must be saved to a device, completed, signed, and emailed to CCUF President Lauren Whaley. The Carolinas Foundation also is ready to receive contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund, which since its establishment has provided more than $2 million in aid to the local, national, and international credit union communities. Any donation collected is disbursed dollar-for-dollar to aid in disaster recovery.

The National Credit Union Foundation on Friday activated CUAid to involve the entire credit union community in financial support for the Carolinas and other states affected by Hurricane Florence.

CUNA Mutual Group has a response team in the Carolinas making contact with affected credit unions to assess damage and support claims reporting.

The National Credit Union Administration offers a hurricane information webpage, and is ready to assist with maintaining or restoring operations and can provide urgent-needs grants of up to $7,500 to low-income credit unions that experience sudden costs for service restoration.

Also, the NCUA and other federal and state regulators joined in an interagency guidance issued this morning, clarifying supervisory practices on relevant matters as lending, temporary facilities, and regulatory reporting.
