In response to pleas for relief expressed by credit unions in his district, Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC13) joined Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA46) this month to write a “Dear Colleague” letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting that the Department of Justice provide “guidance and clarity with regard to website accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).” The letter, signed by more than one hundred members of Congress, includes a map that illustrates the scope of the predatory litigation efforts that demonstrates the need for definitive standards.

"We support the original spirit and intent of the ADA, however, unresolved questions about the applicability of the ADA to websites as well as the Department’s abandonment of the effort to write a rule defining website accessibility standards, has created a liability hazard that directly affects businesses in our states and the customers they serve," said Budd and Correa in the letter.

All of North Carolina’s Congressional delegation signed the letter except for Representatives Alma Adams (D-NC12), G.K. Butterfield (D-NC1), and David Price (D-NC4). The letter also garnered support from South Carolina Representatives Jeff Duncan (R-SC03), Ralph Norman (R-SC05), Mark Sanford (R-SC01), and Joe Wilson (R-SC02).

“Rep. Budd's responsiveness to the credit union movement is a direct result of in-district meetings and events like Hike the Hill and the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference,” noted Evelyn Hawthorne, VP of governmental affairs for the Carolinas Credit Union League. “Most recently, he met with representatives of Summit Credit Union in Greensboro, NC, where the ADA issue was a primary point of discussion.”

Credit unions will have an opportunity to thank Rep. Ted Budd during the League’s Hike the Hill set for July 24-25 in Washington, DC.
