The Carolinas Credit Union League (CCUL) and Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) have begun the long process of recovery following the five-alarm fire in downtown Raleigh last Thursday that damaged the Quorum Center offices. The fifteen-story building, which housed 37 condominium units and six floors of commercial tenants, suffered external heat damage along with water damage from the emergency sprinkler system.

Access to the Quorum Center has been limited since the fire, but staff were given a brief opportunity this week to retrieve essential items. While the building is under repair, staff will continue to work remotely for the next couple of weeks then relocate to Coastal Federal Credit Union’s headquarters at 1000 St. Albans Drive in Raleigh. Service to credit unions in the Carolinas will remain uninterrupted, and all staff can be reached via email and phone.

The cause of the fire, which started at an under-construction apartment complex across the street, is still under investigation by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF) Agency and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Raleigh Fire Chief John McGrath noted this was the worst fire in Raleigh since 1924, damaging several buildings surrounding the construction site. However, only minor injuries were reported.

“CCUL appreciates the dedication and bravery of the 130 firefighters, police, and other emergency personnel who risked their lives to battle the fire,” said John Radebaugh, president and CEO of the League. "We also appreciate the outreach and support from the credit union community in the Carolinas and around the country, as well as local Raleigh businesses—the response has been overwhelming," he added.

More updates will be provided as they become available.
