Piedmont Advantage CU advocates fraud prevention in the Triad with Shred Day
Wednesday, May 18, 2016
Winston Salem, NC — Piedmont Advantage Credit Union will be teaming up with COR365 to host a free Community Shred Day at the Piedmont Advantage headquarters located at 3530 Advantage Way in Winston Salem, NC, on Saturday, May 21.
The community is welcomed to bring two boxes (size: 12 x 10 x 15) filled with sensitive information (paper only) to be shredded in front of them in a COR365 shred truck that will be parked in the Piedmont Advantage parking lot from 9:00am until 1:00pm that day.
Fraud and identity theft are consistently on the rise and include cyber threats, medical record breaches, financial and tax crime, and organizational fraud. The Javelin Strategy and Research 2015 Identity Fraud Report found that 12.7 million people were victims of identity fraud in the United States during the past year, which is one victim every two seconds. As a result, $16 billion was stolen from consumers last year. While personal identity protection is getting more difficult every day with new technologies emerging, the “old school” ways of identity theft are still common. A printed social security number that isn’t thoroughly marked out in a pile of trash can cost thousands of dollars’ worth of identity damage that may take months or even years to reconcile.
Additionally, shredding your sensitive information is an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your trash. Shredded paper gets recycled instead of being disposed of in landfills, and recycling reduces the amount of raw materials, such as trees, that are used during the paper-making process.
Piedmont Advantage Credit Union invites the community to take a step forward in their personal identity protection and mark their calendars for this event on May 21. The Piedmont Advantage team will be also available in the branch to answer questions about identity safety and soundness.
