CUaware Protégé Competition begins; finals set for September

The Carolinas Credit Union League, CUaware, and participating credit union chapters are excited to kick off the new and improved CUaware Protégé Competition for rising professionals age 35 and under. Formerly known as the Palmetto Protégé Competition, the revamped program now spans both North Carolina and South Carolina under the direction of CUaware.

CUaware is a council of the league created to fill a gap that exists within the credit union industry: the very people that work in credit unions don’t know they work for the best-kept secret. The council seeks to informally introduce all credit union employees to the credit union movement.

"This program is an opportunity for credit unions and chapters to both recognize the value and potential in rising professionals and reinforce cooperative principles and credit union philosophy,” said Jeff Hardin, CCUL director of cooperative initiatives and CUaware member.

The competition is based on a three-tiered structure. Each participating credit union identifies one (1) candidate to send to the chapter-level competition, where he or she will complete a brief written exam and give a five-minute presentation on a category from a preset list. Credit union chapters will have until August 15, 2014 to host their competition and determine a winner to send to the finals at the CCUL 2014 Leadership Conference September 4-6 in Pinehurst, NC.

The final winner of the CUaware Protégé Competition will earn a position on the CUaware Leadership Council and his or her choice of the following developmental scholarships funded by the league:

  • Southeast CUNA Management School – One-year registration, valued at more than $1,300 (requires commitment to three-year program)
  • NYIB 2015 Annual Conference – Registration and lodging, valued at $1,300
  • CCUL Hike the Hill (Washington, DC) – Full participation including airfare and lodging, valued at $1,000
  • Principles & Philosophy Conference Scholarship – Includes tuition ($750), two nights lodging, and meals.

Two runners-up also will have their choice of developmental scholarships.
