Despite Hurricane Irma's threat to cancel, the League's annual Compliance Conference was held September 12-13 at the Great Wolf Lodge Conference Center in Concord, NC. Due to the weather, a few speakers weren't able to travel to Concord but presented via Skype.

On Tuesday, Thomas Lawler from FinCEN kicked off the conference with an update on Business Email Compromise, which has seen a huge increase in the past year. He offered tips to avoid these scams, such as verifying accuracy of email addresses and paying close attention to account information. Thomas Colclough from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission followed with an update on the American Disability Act supported by a panel-discussion and website compliance demonstration.

Kathleen Blanchard with The HMDA Academy spoke on the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act and property-related issues. She stressed that referring to the commentary in the HMDA regulation is very important because it contains “the meat” of the requirements.

Wednesday started with a session on cybersecurity from Laura Faulkner of CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP. Her biggest takeaway is to be prepared. Assume there will be a breach of information and defend your systems with that knowledge.

Brian Tate of Network Branded Prepaid Card Association also joined with information on the new Prepaid Card Rule which goes into effect April 1, 2018.

Other event highlights included sessions on Same Day ACH, call reports, MLA credit card compliance, FCRA, FDCPA, EMV, employment and labor law, and much more. The 2017 conference truly had something for everyone.
