The credit union industry has mounted efforts to help with recovery from both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation is sharing updates on those efforts below.
Harvey Disaster Relief Update
The National Credit Union Foundation announced late Friday that it had surpassed over $1 million in contributions for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Campaign. CUAid has raised $817,765 and the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation raised $245,910 as of today.
The need is great in Texas and the road to recovery will be long. Potentially up to 6,000 employees are affected and many credit unions are still closed in the disaster area. Already, the Cornerstone Foundation has received applications for over $500,000 in aid.
The Carolinas Foundation sent a check to CUAid Monday afternoon for nearly $12,000 for the Harvey Relief Campaign. The Carolinas Foundation’s goal of matching individual contributions up to $5,000 was surpassed in large part by contributions from employees, credit union members, business partners and more.
“Thank you for your generosity in these times of need,” shared Lauren Whaley, Foundation president. “Donations are still coming in and the Carolinas Foundation will be issuing another check to CUAid at the end of the month.”

Irma Disaster Relief Activated
Although the direct impact of Hurricane Irma was curtailed in the Carolinas, the impact on millions of Florida citizens is still being determined. Extensive power outages, flooding and wind damage are being felt as the storm continues to move north. According to the latest reports, up to 15,000 credit union employees are in Hurricane Irma’s path.
On Monday morning, the National Foundation announced that CUAid has been activated for Hurricane Irma and it will coordinate with the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation in the disaster areas to distribute money efficiently to affected credit union employees and volunteers.
“Just as we did with Harvey Relief, the Carolinas Foundation will match individual donations received for Hurricane Irma, up to a total of $5,000,” Whaley said. “All donations collected by the Carolinas Foundation will be sent directly to CUAid for disbursement, dollar-for-dollar.”
Disaster Relief in the Carolinas
All reports from credit unions in the affected storm zones in the Carolinas indicate that service to members has resumed and all branches are in full operation. As a reminder, disaster relief grants for any credit union employee or volunteer in North or South Carolina are available through the Carolinas Foundation. Qualifying persons that experienced damage to their home as a result of Hurricane Irma, should contact Lauren Whaley at firstname.lastname@example.org to receive a disaster relief grant application.
