Columbia, SC and Raleigh, NC--As Congress has its legislative work on hold to return home and engage constituents during the August recess, the League is connecting credit unions with numerous in-person opportunities throughout the Carolinas.

VP of Governmental Affairs Evelyn Hawthorne in her July 31 Federal Legislative Update shared a series of thirteen town halls hosted by three of the North Carolina delegation. In the coming weeks, Rep. Patrick McHenry (NC-10) has five over two weeks beginning August 16 in Hickory, Rep. David Price (NC-04) has added an August 23 listening session in Raleigh, and Rep. Robert Pittenger (NC-09) will make nine stops in three days beginning August 29.

In South Carolina, legislators will see credit unions and the League at several events including two chapter-hosted functions. New Rep. Ralph Norman (SC-05) will have breakfast at Sharonview FCU August 16, Sen. Tim Scott Legislative Aide Saat Alety meets with advocates August 22, credit unions are a sponsor at the Faith and Freedom BBQ hosted by Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-03) on August 28, and the Columbia Chapter of CUs hosts Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-01) on August 29 at Seawell's. Three members of the SC Senate are confirmed for the Upstate Chapter's August 22 Legislative Night, while the Pee Dee Chapter and Lowcountry Chapter have theirs September 12 and October 12, respectively.

Every event is valued because at-home activities are not only more accessible for many credit unions, but also have local, personal tones.

"Credit unions are owned by members who are in their communities--the same people who are our elected officials' constituents," EVP/COO Dan Schline notes. "Recess activities are important because those relationships are clearer here at home. The mutual commitment of credit unions and legislators to serving citizens is in plain view."
