|SC credit union leaders meet with Nick Myers June 2.
While the U.S. Senate was in a week-long recess, Family Trust Federal Credit Union hosted a meeting with Nick Myers, Senator Graham’s (R-SC) financial services aide. Representatives from Family Trust Federal Credit Union, Founders Federal Credit Union, Sharonview Federal Credit Union, and CCUL attended the June 2 meeting.
Myers gave a general update on the happenings in D.C. with a focus on financial services issues. He reiterated Sen. Graham’s support of our tax status and several regulatory relief measures, including restricting the authority of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's (CFPB).
Myers fielded several questions on the Financial CHOICE Act that is currently in the U.S. House and includes several regulatory relief measures like the CFPB component. This vote is a partisan issue, and while it is expected to pass through the House, it will face a bigger challenge in the Senate. Myers is hopeful that the legislation will face the Senate in the late fall.
"Having an in-district meeting, not constrained by time limitations, proved to be an incredibly productive means for expressing legislative and regulatory concerns," said David Casey, Family Trust FCU VP of business development/government relations. "Our discussions were very open and constructive, and allowed us to express industry concerns in relation to what is happening in Washington."
In addition to legislative discussion, attendees were able to speak specifically on their credit unions and the unique members they serve, and continue to educate staffers on what sets us apart from banks.
