Filing period for most NC races opens today
At noon today, the filing period opened for North Carolina elections including state legislative, congressional, and some local offices. Not included are those for judicial districts, after judges at the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled late last week to overturn a prior court ruling that reinstated the judicial primaries. We will continue to keep a close watch on the filings. See the NC Free Enterprise Foundation’s latest candidate tracker here.

One seat guaranteed of new representation is that of Rep. H.M. “Mickey” Michaux (D-NC31), who at forty years of service is the longest-tenured member of the NC General Assembly. Rep. Michaux announced his retirement on the State House floor Feb. 9. His service extended back to his activism during the civil rights movement. He is one of very few politicians who earned the right to refer to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. by his first name, after marching beside the late civil rights leader. He will be missed.
