A primary focus of the Carolinas Credit Union League is reinforcing and advancing our role as credit unions’ advocate in Washington, DC and our state capitals. We have taken an "all politics is local” approach in building our advocacy program and have a set team of CCUL staff handling political work in each state.

Evelyn Hawthorne, director of governmental affairs (NC), heads up CCUL’s North Carolina efforts. Before joining the league in November 2015, she spent thirteen years serving as principal of Evelyn Hawthorne Government and Public Relations, providing advocacy, lobbying and consultation for numerous clients. Evelyn also has worked in education and healthcare advocacy, bringing her collective experience to twenty years. In her new role at the league, she will continue to work closely with the NC General Assembly and members of North Carolina's congressional delegation on matters important to Carolinas' credit unions.

Evelyn sees advocacy as an opportunity to make North Carolina a better place for all North Carolinians. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communications from the University of Michigan and is a member of the North Carolina Professional Lobbyists Association Board of Directors.

Billy Boylston, director of governmental affairs (SC), is our point person in South Carolina. Billy joined the league in December 2013. He is a South Carolina native who has done political work on Capitol Hill and in the state. His experience includes work with Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX-02), candidate and Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC-03), the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and the Romney/Ryan campaign.

In addition to serving as CCUL’s lobbyist at the SC General Assembly, Billy will coordinate our federal legislative efforts with members from South Carolina. CCUL also has retained lobbyist Dwight Cauthen in Columbia.

Based in North Carolina, Geoff Finken is director of member engagement. He previously served as director of administration for the league service corporation, Professional League Resources (PLR). Geoff joined the league in 2012, bringing nearly ten years of administrative and project management experience to the position. A notary in the state of North Carolina, he also plays a vital role in communicating chapter and league events and other opportunities with member credit unions throughout the year. Geoff also manages the Carolinas Capital Club and coordinates special projects and initiatives of benefit to the league and affiliated credit unions, such as the Save to Win program.

Carolinas Credit Union League SVP of Association Services Dan Schline oversees advocacy work in both states.
