A primary focus of the Carolinas Credit Union League is reinforcing and advancing our role as credit unions’ advocate in Washington, DC and our state capitals. We have taken an "all politics is local” approach in building our advocacy program and have a set team of CCUL staff handling political work in each state.

Lauren Whaley, vice president of governmental affairs, heads up CCUL’s North Carolina efforts. Lauren served as the North Carolina Credit Union League’s lobbyist at the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA) for the past five years, leading efforts to pass legislation to allow prize-based savings accounts and to make valuable changes to the State Credit Union Act. Lauren also played a key role in advancing legislation to combat elder financial abuse. In her new role, Lauren also will work more closely with members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation.

Billy Boylston, director of governmental affairs, will be our point person in South Carolina. Billy joined the league in December 2013 and, with the South Carolina General Assembly (SCGA) convening earlier this week, already is hard at work. Billy is a South Carolina native who has done political work on Capitol Hill and in the state. His experience includes work with Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX-02), candidate and Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC-03), the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and the Romney/Ryan campaign.

In addition to serving as CCUL’s lobbyist at the SCGA, Billy will coordinate our federal legislative efforts with members from South Carolina. Jim Nunamaker continues to work with CCUL on a contract basis to supporting the league’s efforts in Columbia and Washington, and CCUL has retained lobbyist Dwight Cauthen in Columbia.

Susanna Hailey joined the CCUL staff at the beginning of January. Susanna will serve as PAC and grassroots specialist in North Carolina, helping to bolster state political support and generate effective action by statewide advocates.

Carolinas Credit Union League SVP of Association Services Dan Schline oversees advocacy work in both states.
